What am I buying?

When you buy fonts from MCKL, you are buying a license: permission to use the font software in a particular way, at a particular scale. MCKL keeps ownership of the fonts, and the license agreement sets out what you can do with them. There are three kinds of license:

Desktop licenses let you install the fonts on computers to make printed matter, images, presentations, videos, and logos.

Webfont licenses let you use the fonts to style text on your website.

App licenses let you embed the fonts in an app that you publish.

Each kind of use needs its own license. For example, to use the fonts both in print and on your website, you will need a Desktop license and a Webfont license.

We also offer larger licenses, including unlimited and enterprise licenses, and licenses for other uses, such as games, live broadcast graphics, hardware, or servers. Please email info@mckltype.com to discuss.

Who needs a license?

Anyone who installs the fonts must be covered by a license.

If you are a design studio, agency, or freelancer, you may purchase a license on behalf of your client. Name your client as the licensee at checkout. Everyone who uses the fonts, on your team and at your client, counts toward the number of users, and you may use the fonts only for that client’s work.

Freelancers and contractors who work for you can be counted as users in your license. They may use the fonts only for your work, and must delete them when the work ends. Outside agencies need to purchase their own license.

What size license do we need?

Desktop licenses are based on the number of people who use the fonts, not the number of computers. Count everyone with access to the fonts, including freelancers, contractors, and anyone using them in Canva, Figma, or similar tools.

Webfont licenses are based on unique monthly visitors: the number of different devices that visit your website in a month, not page views. Add together the visitors for all subdomains and top-level domains that use the fonts. Most analytics tools report this as monthly users.

App licenses are based on unique monthly users: the number of different devices that run your app in a month, usually reported as monthly active users.

Choose the size that covers a typical month, using your best estimate for a new site or app. A short spike, such as a launch, does not mean you need to upgrade.

If you go over your license size for three months in a row, you will need to upgrade, and you only pay the difference. To upgrade, email info@mckltype.com with your order number and current monthly numbers.

Do licenses expire?

No. Licenses are perpetual: you pay once, and you can keep using the fonts for as long as you follow the terms of the license. If you outgrow your license size, you can upgrade at any time and pay only the difference.

Where are my fonts?

After completing your order, you will receive an email with your fonts. If you have a user account, your fonts will also be in “Purchases,” where you can download all fonts that you have licensed. You do not need an account to buy fonts.

How do I download my fonts again?

If you have an account, all of your fonts are in “Purchases.” If you checked out as a guest and can’t find your order email, please email info@mckltype.com with your order number or the email address you used, and we will send your fonts again.

Do you offer student discounts?

No, but we DO have trial fonts with limited character sets that are free to download and use for non-commercial work, including student projects. In addition, you can rent many of our fonts on FontStand or access them through your Adobe Creative Cloud subscription.

What can I do with trial fonts?

Trial fonts are free to use for testing and non-commercial work: comps, mock-ups, internal presentations, client pitches, and student projects. They have a limited character set. Anything published or sold, and any logo, requires a full license. See the Trial License for details.

What about Adobe Fonts and FontStand?

Fonts you use through Adobe Fonts or FontStand are covered by those services’ own terms, not by a MCKL license, so check their terms for what is allowed. For example, Adobe Fonts does not cover self-hosted webfonts or embedding in an app. For those uses, or anything else their terms do not cover, you can license the fonts directly from us.

Is Font Radar a partner of yours?

Yes. We use Font Radar to monitor how our fonts are used. If you hear from Font Radar about MCKL fonts and have any questions, please email info@mckltype.com.

Can I use fonts in a logo?

Yes! Desktop fonts may be converted to outlines and modified for the purpose of making a logo or lettering. However, you may not edit and/or recompile the typeface data into a new installable font. Webfont and App licenses do not cover logos.

Can I use fonts in video or on social media?

Desktop licenses cover video, film, broadcast, advertising, and social media, as long as the type is rendered into the finished work. Live broadcast graphics, such as on-air tickers or score graphics, require a separate license. Webfont and App licenses do not cover video or social media.

Can I use fonts in Canva or Figma?

Desktop fonts may be uploaded to Canva, Figma, and similar online design tools, as long as everyone who has access to the fonts there is counted in your license size. The fonts may not be shared in a public team or in templates offered to others. Webfont and App licenses cannot be used in Canva, Figma, or similar tools.

Can I embed fonts in documents?

Desktop fonts may be subset and embedded in static documents such as PDFs. Webfont and App licenses do not cover documents. A separate license is required for ebooks, apps, games, live broadcast graphics, hardware and displays, servers, and alphabet products such as stamp sets or adhesive letters. Can I use fonts in development?

Webfonts may be used on a development or staging version of your website before it launches, as long as it is not open to the public and reasonable steps are taken to protect the files.

App fonts may be used in test builds of an app named on your license before it is released.

Are sub / top-level domains included?

Webfont licenses allow installation on subdomains and top-level domains, as long as the monthly visitors for all domains are included when calculating the license. For example, website.com, website.co.uk, and shop.website.com would all count as one domain.

Can I use the fonts to train AI?

No. Our license does not allow the fonts, or images of their characters, to be used to train or develop any machine learning or AI model or dataset.

How do I install fonts on a Mac or PC?

Desktop fonts (OTF, or TTF on request) are the only fonts that can be installed on your computer.
On a Mac, double-click on the fonts and install via Font Book.
On a PC, double-click on the fonts and install via the system.
We do not recommend any third-party font management programs.

How do I install webfonts?

Webfonts (WOFF and WOFF2) are delivered with a CSS @font-face rule and HTML sample files for convenience. Our license requires you to use reasonable efforts to protect the font software from unauthorized usage, including disabling hotlinking and directory listing. Webfonts must be hosted by you or your hosting provider, and may not be served through a third-party font service.

What font formats do you provide?

Desktop fonts are delivered as Postscript-flavored OpenType format (OTF), and are also available as TrueType-flavored (TTF) on request.
Webfonts are delivered in WOFF and WOFF2 formats.
App fonts are delivered as TrueType-flavored OpenType format (TTF).

Do you offer variable fonts?

Variable fonts are available for select typefaces. Checkout shows when a variable font is included with your license.

What characters are included?

All of our typefaces include a Latin Extended character set, which covers the languages listed below. In addition, some typefaces include stylistic alternates, small caps, additional kinds of numbers, or other special characters. To see what characters are included, check the Character Set section of the typeface you are looking at.

What languages do your fonts support?

All MCKL Type Foundry fonts support the following languages:

Do you make custom typefaces?

Alongside our retail library, MCKL designs custom typefaces for brands and agencies, including custom versions of our existing fonts. To talk about a project, please email info@mckltype.com.

What payment methods do you accept?

Our credit card processing is handled by Stripe, which accepts all major credit cards. Prices are in U.S. dollars. If you would prefer to pay by ACH or wire transfer, please email us at info@mckltype.com.

Is checkout secure?

All orders are processed with Stripe, which is certified to PCI Service Provider Level 1. This is the most stringent level of certification available. MCKL never receives or stores your card details.

Can I get a refund?

Because fonts are delivered digitally, all sales are final, and we cannot provide exchanges, returns, or refunds. If you accidentally purchase the wrong font, email us right away and we can help you out. If you have any technical problems using the fonts, please email info@mckltype.com.

Do you charge sales tax or VAT?

We do not currently collect sales tax or VAT on font orders. Where we are required to collect tax, it will be shown at checkout before you pay.
